A Very Millennial Christmas
12/24/2015In one of the rare times that I was able to watch Myx Daily Top Ten, I heard VJ Diego saying about how the excitement of Christmas dwindles as you grow up and that the kids should embrace their ability to be excited for Christmas while they can. Unfortunately, this statement has become a fact that almost all of us experience.
Why is this so?
Well, I guess the excitement of Christmas fades away because of our routine traditions. We decorate our houses with Christmas lights and ornaments as early as September, buy gifts for monitos and monitas then complete the Simbang Gabi to have the opportunity to make a wish. Then, come Christmas day. Everyone shows up, we ate, we laughed then we go home. Christmas is done and we have to wait for another year for the Christmas spirit to be within us. And yet I ask you, is this really Christmas? Has Christmas morphed from a special day to an excuse to decorate, to spend and eat? What happened?
Why?
Well, I am already 20 years-old and I guess it is safe to say that I've already spent and celebrated 20 Christmases whether I remember them or not but for those that I still remember, they were really fun and happy not because of the food or the gifts, but because I was able to eat food and exchange gifts with my family. Yes, with my family and we truly need to take advantage of this.
This is so because a lot of things happened and a lot of things will happen. We are all growing up and taking on responsibilities as we go on. We become teenagers, young adults then adults with even a family of our own. We change and as my high school adviser always tells us, Change is the only thing permanent in life.
Nothing is ever constant so if you think that what happened last Christmas will happen this Christmas and the next as well, you're completely wrong. Everything changes. The world continues to turn and if we're lucky, we will all be able to notice every turn of the world. We will be able to live life and not experience it. So, I beg you to stop stressing over the food or making the house as grand as ever because with or without it, Christmas will still be special because we are with the persons that we love and treasure the most.
Make the most of the holiday period. Meet your old friends, spend time with your cousins, have a breather and relax. Holiday season only happens once and if we throw it away, we are definitely losing a lot. So, what are you waiting for? Greet everyone a Merry Christmas!
