Oblicon. For a wide range of people, this word means nothing to them. It does not have any major impact on their lives. It is not a part of their daily lives but for me and my classmates and those who take up Accountancy or any business course, Oblicon is a very big deal.

Oblicon stands for "Law on Obligations and Contracts." As its name suggests, it talks about the law. The subject can somehow be overwhelming with its numerous terminologies and principles. You really have to exert a lot of effort to survive this class but three months in this class, I learned a lot of things. Things that are not only related to the law but also to things that could be useful in our daily lives.

In order to survive Oblicon or even any class or venture in life, you must be FEARLESS. To be honest, I was very intimidated by our Oblicon professor. She was headstrong and wity. She is strict and knows what she wants. Give her a wrong answer and she'll squeeze you until you blurt out the correct one. If you're weak and does not know how to receive criticisms, you will be torn to pieces and that is not what I want. That is not what we want. What we want is for us to be able to stand up for ourselves and speak. Given the difficult situation, we should learn to share our ideas and ask questions. It is normal to be scared and shy when facing a very intimidating person or situation but if we let the intimidation eat us, nothing will happen. We will be stuck. No learning will flow and no effective conversation will happen so it will definitely be helpful if we forget about our shyness and learn to find our voice.

To Err is Human
Let's face it. Nobody is perfect. It is not every day that we will be praised by our professors or anyone at all. We will say silly things and wrong answers and out of which, we could receive eyerolls and raised eyebrows. People will question our abilities, knowledge and skills. Yet, it is okay. It is okay to make mistakes.

We all have good and bad days and sometimes, every day is a bad day but we should not make the wrong assumption that making mistakes is a sign of weakness or dumbness. Mistakes are simply roadblocks which are made to make us stronger. Even I had bad days in Oblicon. I was so disappointed and frustrated with myself because I knew that I could do better. I knew that I was above that so I just let myself drown with frustration that day. I tried to shake the memory away but it won't disappear. I had no choice but to face it and I faced it. During my morning run the following day, I let all of my emotions flow. I blamed myself for that disastrous Oblicon class but after which, I decided to just let it go. It already happened and nothing could change that fact. The only conclusion I could come up with is that in order to turn the tables, I just need to study more and read more which brings us to the next lesson I learned in Oblicon.

When you have fifteen to twenty articles to read in a short span of time, it is very easy to conclude that it is impossible to finish the reading assignments. Well, the reassuring truth is that it is possible to read fifteen to twenty articles in a short span of time. All we have to do is to manage our time. Did I also mention that reading the articles is not enough? Understanding the articles is enough and one thing I learned from my past experiences is that to know that you already know and understand everything by heart is when you feel like vomiting them. The principle is queer but it helped me a lot. Because of my hectic schedule and assignments from my other subjects, my only time to study Oblicon is during the morning and by morning, I mean four o' clock in the morning. Yes, I wake up early to read so that I would not cram when the next Oblicon class arrives because cramming is not a good way to study. It is not even a way to study.

It Pays to Know Your Law

Lastly, Oblicon opened my eyes to the good side of law. I was able to understand the different rights we have and the circumstances wherein we could benefit from them. Studying law is not scary. It is not depressing either. It is actually exciting with all of the different situations given to you to scrutinize. Also, it is a plus factor when you know your law because you could relate it to the current issues going on in and out of country. It would also protect us from the scammers and liars who can defraud and take advantage of us. Did I also mention that ignorance of the law is not accepted as an excuse to the court?

Do you like Oblicon now? Well, I would not blame you if you would still stay no. It is still a difficult subject after all but when you look at it not as an omen but as a blessing, it could change the way you handle the subject and it could also boost your energy and confidence. So, what are you waiting for? Grab the infamous law book and start studying!
